Combat Cardio Classes

Mar 12, 2008 @ 05:40 pm by wayne

Following on from my discussion yesterday on the benefits of boxing and kickboxing for fitness, I thought I would make some comments about some boxercise/kickboxercise classes, I have seen.

What is actually taught in classes varies greatly, with some classes using the technique, focus and intent from the base art and others using a “movement” approach. By this I mean they take a movement from boxing or the martial arts and then use it to develop a aerobics class with martial moves. I am not saying that these movement classes don’t have any value, they can be a great workout, it’s just in my admittedly biased opinion, I prefer to see more focus on the technique and intent of the art.

The quality of instruction can also vary greatly, with some instructors displaying good boxing or martial arts technique and others looking like they have no knowledge of the arts and are just doing moves that look a bit like boxing or the martial arts. Unfortunately some of these instructors don’t appear to have the experience to pick up techniques flaws that left unchecked may contribute to pain.

The bottom line is, if you’re interested in doing one of these classes, look around and find the class style and instructors that best suits you.

Fitness Benefits Of Boxing

Mar 11, 2008 @ 05:31 pm by wayne

Boxing or kickboxing sessions have a variety of benefits for the person who wants a change of pace. Because of the nature of the sport, these classes are generally based on a timed round structure, which is a type of interval training. Interval training has the reputation of being more effective than steady state cardio as a way to lose fat, while still working your heart and lungs. The classes also often incorporate bodyweight training to increase your muscular endurance and strength, padwork to improve your hand eye co-ordination and hitting the heavy bag will help improve your power.

Mobility Drills

Mobility drills have become an element within many training programs. They can be done as part of a dynamic warmup or to specifically improve the mobility of a joint. This video comes courtesy of Joe DeFranco and demonstrates roll-overs into V-sits, fire hydrant circles, mountain climbers and groiners.
