Training In The Heat

It is very important to look after yourself if you are going to be training hard in the summer heat. It is vitally important that you keep well hydrated: not only with this help you maintain and improve your performance, it can help prevent potential heat related problems including Heat Stress and Heat Stroke. It is thought that if you are feeling thirsty, you are already slightly dehydrated, so keep hydrated, keep cool  and keep healthy.

Mobility Drills

Mobility drills have become an element within many training programs. They can be done as part of a dynamic warmup or to specifically improve the mobility of a joint. This video comes courtesy of Joe DeFranco and demonstrates roll-overs into V-sits, fire hydrant circles, mountain climbers and groiners.

Strength

Michael Boyle author of Functional Training for Sports, has this great concept for being strong in an overall sense. You should be able to bench, hang clean and chin the same weight. This is a great goal to achieve and one that I am not able to do yet.

Weight Training Tip for Martial Artists

If speed and power is your goal, don’t follow a bodybuilding style weight training program. Use a variety of repetition schemes, including low reps, focus on faster concentric movements and incorporate explosive movements in your training.
