The Martial Arts and Me
Yesterday I was graded to shodan (first degree black belt) in Iaido. Iaido is a sword based Japanese martial art. It is non combative in nature although like any martial art the techniques have a combative underpinning.
I have always considered the martial arts to be one of the “best” all round exercise forms, although some martial arts (like Iaido) will not necessarily make you breathe hard. There are a great number of benefits of doing an art like Iaido. For me, some of the benefits are that it makes me aware of my movement patterns, is great for body control and ensures that my postural muscles are firing properly plus I get an almost meditative benefit from training.
Last but not least, it’s good fun and it looks very cool.
